LIAM CAREY has been making glass all his working life. He began learning the craft at the age of 16, working in a studio in the market town of Liskeard in south-east Cornwall; and four years later he had the opportunity to take over the premises and equipment of his former employer.
He has carried on the business since then, under the name of Merlin Glass, developing an intimate knowledge of the effects of light falling on and passing through transparent colour, together with a keen awareness of shape and proportion producing a variety of individualistic hand made items, in clear glass, plain colours, or patterned with swirling, feathered, or drape-like effects of colour, resulting in a product designed to be functional and lasting as well as beautiful.
He has also produced prototypes of the brass fittings himself, and working on the design in order to ensure maximum strength, durability and practicality of fitting. Proposed further additions to the present range include fittings in different metals, yet more shapes and colours of glass, and the production of a lever-style handle. |
